Intelligent WIFI auto repeater
In
my last project I explain how to construct a simple auto repeater, here
I hope to go to the next step and create A wireless Intelligent auto
repeater. First a bit of background. When
looking for open wireless networks (hotspots) the normal process is to
fire up a scanner like “netstumbler” find available open networks, then
try to connect to them to see if they actually have Internet access . This is sort of fun at first, but rapidly becomes tedious in the extreme.
What
we have here is a stand alone device , based on my simple repeater that
does all this automatically … First the Auto ap repeater Scans
all networks and then connects to the strongest , it then connects to
the strongest signal and pings google to make sure it is actually
connected to the net , if it is good it tests the connection every 2
min, if not it connects to the next strongest signal and repeats, WAY
COOL, so all you do is point your antenna and it will find Internet in MANY MANY places effortlessly.

1)
This is not for the faint of heart.. It WILL require flashing your
router to a custom firmware, (please study how to do this) There is
quite a bit to learn to do this properly if you fail you will brick your
router . YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.. Once again know what you are doing
BEFORE trying to flash your router.....
2)
We are going to use a custom version of the FANTASTIC firmware called
DD-WDRT2 , great stuff but as you will find during your research the “support” is typical (or worse) then most open source stuff and 10 min at the site will discourage you totally ..
2) you will need a router that can be flashed to a micro build of the firmware, I have used the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 this seems to be a good choice with a built in amp and a very sensitive receive pre-amp..
3) Flash
your router to the version of DD-WRT2 that I have in my download
section . This includes a built in version of the Auto AP script that does the magic..
5) go to admin commands and put autoap in the command box click save start up
6)
reboot your router. Connect to your new network and put in a browser
window http:// (your routers IP)/user/autoap.htm you can see the great
report that Auto-ap puts out...
